This too shall pass: Hurricane Irma

On September 6, 2017 a devil storm Hurricane Irma made an unwelcoming appearance in the Caribbean islands, claiming at least 14 lives.

I was not at home to witness this however my family and friends have had to ride out the Category 5 hurricane with no option to leave. My island home the Turks and Caicos islands has been completely decimated and engulfed in water.

Meteorologists and news reporters forecasted a possible surge of about 20ft when Hurricane Irma was to make its visit to the TCI. Completely brutal language was used to describe what should’ve happened to the island. They said some islands would be “washed off the archipelago” and that there would be numerous deaths. But the Lord our God has a plan for the Turks and Caicos Islands and to this date, there have been no recorded deaths as a result of Hurricane Irma in the TCI.

However, the country has sustained extensive structural damage and flooding. Your house can always be rebuilt but your life cannot be restored. For this I am extremely grateful to God for preserving my family and friends. The panic and anxiety for the two to three days after the hurricane was unrelenting but the reward of no lives lost was warranting.

Some families have yet to get in touch with each other and children abroad are in gut wrenching fear and waterfalls of tears.

The country is in a state of disbelief and many have to deal with the stress of rebuilding their businesses and homes. Our country will never be the same but everything will fall into place, possibly even better than before in due time.

In everything I will GIVE THANKS to the Almighty Father for what he has done and what he is going to do.

What the people need right now is hope and funds to rebuild their lives. Many are without jobs for some time and need the income to get back on the progressive path. Whatever you can, please give to the people. Whether it’s as simple as cleaning someone’s yard of debris or placing a few dollars in their hand, make a move. Unity is the key and we all need each other in this time of need.

This is a wake up call for our people to stand up and be our brothers keeper.

I end on this note of love and compassion. Be good to one another and do unto others as you would like them to do to you. Be blessed.
